The Path to Eagle: An Interview with Patrick Szczotka

Patrick Szczotka joined Troop 777 in 2006, after being a Cub Scout. Five years later, he has earned the distinctive honor of Eagle Scout. Below is a short interview outlining his path to becoming an Eagle Scout. He shares his experiences and challenges in attaining this great honor.

Tell us about your Eagle project?

I built a fence for the Manchester Preserve, which is in Encinitas. It is a rope fence with wooden posts. I did some trail work for them as well.

How did it feel when you received your Eagle badge at the Court of Honor?

I felt like I gained a lot of experience, especially in leadership. Many of my friends say I have good leadership qualities and I owe all that to Boy Scouts.

What is your favorite memory from Scouting?

I don’t think I have one specific one. I really enjoyed the camping trips though. They were a highlight.

Do you have any advice for upcoming scouts who are striving for their Eagle Rank?

Work on your Eagle Scout project a lot sooner. And get working on your “3-month” merit badges early on – Personal Life, Personal Management and Physical fitness. Work on them before you are Star or Life Rank.
